Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Comstock.
Invertebrates: no spinal column.  Bugs and stuff.
Bugs have six legs.  If it doesn't have six legs it is not a bug.  (Sorry spiders).
Colored a picture of a Swallowtail butterly.  They are called swallowtail because of how their tales look.  They defend themselves by smelling really bad, which makes them taste icky to birds.  Moms are bigger and have more blue on their wings.  The dad one has more yellow.  This is true of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, but my butterfly coloring book has a bunch of different color swallowtails.  Must look more into this.

Parables from Nature - Purring When You Are Pleased.

One kitten in a litter purred loudly whenever she was pleased.  The other kitten purred very little and softly.  Their mother told them that they should not purr when they got a plate of milk, because they deserved it and it showed a lack of self-respect to be so emotional.  The same home also had a little boy and a little girl who were cousins.  The little girl had been orphaned and had a very severe childhood to date.  The time came for the kittens to be given to the children, and the boy kept trying to see which one the little girl wanted before he chose, but she would not say.  So, he took the purring kitty and the girl took the not purring kitten.  But the aunt found the girl crying one day because she really wanted the purring kitten.  The aunt talked to her about expressing herself like the purring kitty and not being silent like the other.  People (and kittens) who express appreciation for things, even those deserved, are nicest.  The little girl should not be like the not purring kitten and not voice her desires or joys.
